STEINWAY PIANO RESTORATION PROGRAMS FOR MUSIC DEPARTMENTS

WE RE-MANUFACTURE STEINWAY GRAND PIANOS FOR THEIR SECOND PERFORMANCE DEBUT!

How many Steinway Grand Pianos might there be on a school campus that show signs of fatigue and in need of major repairs? Here in the Meyer Pianos Factory, we re-manufacture and prepare Steinway Grand Pianos for music departments to make a second as-new piano debut at a fraction of the cost required to purchase a new Steinway Grand Piano replacement. And we also offer a factory direct purchase program of Steinway Pianos available from our finished inventories.

The Meyer restoration system recycles those sub-assemblies of a Steinway Piano that do not deteriorate over time. Examples: a cast iron plate continually endures its original strength; it will look like new again after the Meyer restoration. The same is said for virtually all of the woods used to build the inner-outer rim, key bed, soundboard and other wood sub-assemblies. All of these parts and sub-assemblies are collectively known as the acoustic body. The raw materials and manufacturing costs associated to build the acoustic body were paid at the time of the original Steinway Piano acquisition…why would a music department need to incur these costs again at 21st Century prices? And in most cases the woods of a vintage acoustic body were harvested and cured many decades ago. These woods are considered to have superior acoustic qualities as compared to the woods now harvested from current day forests. Consider this extreme example of acoustic excellence produced by vintage tone woods: a 311-year-old Stradivarius Violin was recently sold at an auction for $11.25 million. This instrument is in professional demand for concert and recital performances all around the world. The vintage woods originally used to build this violin continue to sing with a celebrated tonality and resonance as is the case of Meyer restored Steinway Grand Pianos.

The Meyer Legacy

The Meyer Pianos factory is located in Kalisz, a city in Central Poland, an area with a rich history of European piano crafting since the late Nineteenth Century. The Meyer Pianos factory was established by Mr. Withold Meyer in 1983 to manufacture new upright and grand pianos for a select group of European piano companies including Bechstein, Blüthner, Ibach, Schimmel and Bösendorfer. Annual production averaged over 300 new pianos in addition to the restoration of vintage pianos. Meyer ceased new piano production in 2005 and since that time has concentrated solely on the restorations of vintage Steinway and other high-end performance pianos under the continued ownership and management of the Meyer Family. It is this legacy of new piano manufacturing that distinguishes a Meyer Steinway Piano restoration as compared to other rebuild and repair services: the expertise to build a piano from the ground up provides a unique set of skills to restore a vintage piano from the top down. In other words, the Meyer restoration system is actually a reverse-engineered piano manufacturing system!

Each Meyer Steinway restoration is the consummation of European handcrafted piano building. The restoration process begins by disassembling the piano to initiate the restoration of its acoustic body. This is the genesis of a step-by-step re-manufacture of a Steinway Piano at the hands of experienced piano builders. Other parts and sub-assemblies of the piano are replaced during the Meyer restoration process: think “mechanics”. Parts that move whenever the piano is played are installed with new Steinway specified replacements: keys, hammers, action and damper assemblies, strings, etc. Specifications are listed in Exhibit “A” on page 3; see supplier references listed on page 4. Upon completion of a Meyer restoration a re-manufactured Steinway Grand Piano not only sounds like new, but it also feels and responds like new. It is prepared for future generations of service and performance. A ten-year factory warranty is included with every Meyer Steinway Piano restoration.
